#LESSFUCKERY: WHAT CURATORS, Reading series, galleries, museums, theaters can do

THINGS CURATORS; MUSEUMS; THEATERS; AND LITERARY JOURNALS CAN DO

  • See above: If you find yourself with an all white or majority white panel, ask why;
  • Invite guest curators/ editors;
  • We can pay artists or help artists get to a space. There are many ways to do this: pass the hat, sell raffle tickets, sell food or beverages, write grants. Paying artists means that artists will be able to join in a reading;
  • We can consider at every level who is included in readings and who is not. Actively seek out underrepresented writers, actively seek out or solicit writers of color, queer writers, writers new to the literary community, eg simply by ask writers who they’re paying attention to;
  • We can read a statement on fuckery (micro/ macro aggression) before each reading. Warn readers that racism, sexism, or other fuckery will not be tolerated. Open the space for readers and listeners to give feedback if fuckery occurs, listen carefully if they do;
  • (For literary magazines): consider who the slush readers are;
  • (For literary magazines): consider special issues showcasing non-white, non ciscmasculine authors (Artemis Rising; Queers Destroy Horror; POC Destroy Horror);
  • Support exhibits, events, literary magazines, and spaces that showcase and magnify historically marginalized voices;
  • We can curate seasons, shows, and panels to a diverse audience, expecting them to be in the room, always expecting everyone to be in the room.
