Syr is an incredible teacher and mentor

There is absolutely no way I would have been able to complete a first draft of my memoir without their ongoing support, enthusiasm, and creative generosity. Our sessions are so dynamic and inspiring and I often leave having generated more work. Having Syr in my life is an invaluable lifeline as a creative, I am so fucking grateful to be able to have an on-going professional relationship with them.”

FAQs and Details!

  • I am an art top and imaginary friend. I help writers, storytellers, artists, composers, and all kinds of creatives identify their dreams, reconnect to the joy and magic of their art, and get their work out into the world through workshops, 1:1 coaching and developmental editing. I work from a queer and speculative bent, but all expressions and genres are welcome here. MORE!

  • With schedules, deadlines, encouragement, inspiration, and laughter! Prepare to meet the full force of my theatre production background, my writers’ room experience, and my 10 years of developmental editing, AND also my belief that art must be joyful, restful, pleasurable at every step to be sustainable. We are going far, we are going brave, and the only way to do that is to celebrate along the way. Details and rates HERE.

  • Check out my fee structure here. I work in pre-reserved blocks with discounts for longer blocks, but we’ll agree on a payment schedule that works for you. I always offer at least one free and one 1/2 price spot in my own workshops. Get in touch if you need that. You can also sign up for my newsletter for a free writing experiment and places to submit.

  • No, you haven’t lost touch, matey. Yes, yes YES you belong. C’mere. Sit. Listen.

Art is a self-liberatory practice that belongs to everyone. It’s part of being alive, along with collective liberation and love (however you define it) AND the last time I checked, we live in a world that does not value artists. If you’ve lost touch, or if you’re just getting here, it’s not your fault. You’re here now. And you’re just in time!

I specialize in helping writers get back in touch with their creative practice. I have spent 10 years studying creative process, teaching workshops, and understanding how this thing we call inspiration works.

Parents, caregivers, and long lost artists are especially welcome.

  • I hear you! I am a trans-disciplinary artist and the co-founder of two arts organizations. I KNOW this wild art life. I have worked with hundreds of artists (novelists, short story writers, composers, illustrators, visual artists…). I’m here because dreaming is a muscle, and visioning is a muscle, and building a lifelong art practice is the gift! It would be my pleasure to walk this road with you.

Here’s me, Syr, busting through artistic blocks!

  • “Throughout my time working with Syr, they supported me and my writing with extraordinary care, thoughtfulness, and enthusiasm. They are a brilliant and joyful human ... I could not recommend Syr more highly.”

    C.H., Novelist

  • I love working with Syr. They have an incredible way of helping me set achievable deadlines and uncovering the most urgent work. While working with Syr, I was able to complete over 100 pages of a fairytale collection after feeling blocked for years. Their knowledge of fabulist, speculative, horror, and fantasy markets is invaluable. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

  • Syr is an incredible writing teacher, mentor and editor. There is absolutely no way I would have been able to complete a first draft of my memoir without their ongoing support, enthusiasm for my project, and creative generosity. Syr helps me stay accountable to myself and to my creative process by creating structure and realistic deadlines, yet is always flexible and positive and affirming when life happens. Our sessions are so dynamic and inspiring and I often leave having generated more work. Having Syr in my life is an invaluable lifeline as a creative, I am so fucking grateful to be able to have an on-going professional relationship with them. ”

  • “Syr’s mode of reading is deeply generous and helps surface themes in my writing that I didn't even realize. Having that trust in my fellow readers helps me lean into drafting as early, messy, but still with kernels in it of something bigger, because I know it will be taken for what it is and will be, not what it isn't. … Syr's care and attentiveness with my work makes me feel like a writer whose work matters.”

  • “I have spent many weeknights in Syr’s workshops, feeling inspired to think less and write more. These welcoming, supportive classes have shown me how to unwind the creative process and see what pours out by engaging in creative experimentation. Their classes not only motivated me to take my work further by pursuing my MFA in creative writing, but also served as an artistic refuge when I need a break from writing in academic settings. I'm so grateful this space exists and continues to grow as I know that as long as I write in San Francisco, I'll be at their workshops finding new possibilities for my art.

  • I have participated in several workshops with Syr and am incredibly grateful for all of the generative exercises and thought-provoking discussions they entailed. These workshops have all influenced my evolution as a writer and contributed to my personal growth. I had not written much since completing my MFA,, and provided the inspiration, guidance, and support I needed to restart and cultivate my writing practice. This empowered me to climb out of an existential depression, as well as to transition to the next stage of my career. As a QTPoC cross-genre writer with an interdisciplinary background in the arts and humanities, I often find myself in between (and/or part of multiple) conversations and communities. Syr’s workshops offered an inclusive space where I was free to explore these intersectionalities (alongside my quirky and eclectic interests) through writing, which has informed my queer non-binary feminist sensibility.

  • Syr pushes writers to tear down their limiting beliefs about what they can and can’t do, and shows them how to rebuild their creative cities to accommodate the new and wildly born being taking root inside. With Syr’s help, writers don’t just find their creative genius, they wrestle it to the ground and then learn how to make it fall in love with them.
